Year 9 City-wide Languages Day November 2008
On 20th November 2008 we invited all the Secondary schools in Wolverhampton to send 10 Year 9 pupils each to Colton Hills for a Year 9 Languages Day. Our aim was to reinforce with Year 9 pupils the importance of learning languages.
The day started with Lorraine Morris from Job Centre Plus in Birmingham telling us about the importance of studying languages and the types of jobs available to pupils with language skills. She showed us how she had travelled all over Europe with her work, but emphasised that even if we stayed in the Midlands languages were important for all kinds of jobs.
Pupils then took part in a number of workshops. Workshops available included: Japanese origami, Chinese, Turkish, Irish and Swedish language taster sessions, Tai Chi and British Sign Language. Representatives from Wolverhampton and Aston University were present to tell pupils about routes into languages.
Feedback tells us that pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day.
