Visit to German Christmas Market, Birmingham
On Thursday, 18th December 40 Year 10 pupils, who are all studying German to GCSE, went with their teachers to the German Christmas Market in Birmingham.
The German Christmas Market in Birmingham has over 80 stalls and is the largest German Christmas Market outside Germany. Stallholders from Frankfurt, Birmingham's twin town in Germany, set up their stalls selling authentic products from Germany.
Pupils were able to try German food: Lebkuchen, Bretzel, Stollen, Bratwurst, Bratkartoffeln, Schnitzel, Eintopf were all on sale as well as German sweets and chocolates. They could visit stalls selling German Christmas candles, lights, jewellery, knitware, ornaments. The atmosphere was really Christmassy, exactly as it is in Germany. Pupils were keen to practise their German by chatting to the stallholders, who were very friendly and chatted back in German.
Pupils experienced a popular German tradition at first hand and really benefitted from this experience.
Frohe Weihnachten!
